PROBLEM STATEMENT

PROBLEM STATEMENT

App users were not engaging with content created in the app. How can we provide a better way to create content that feels fun, easy, and desirable to a user, while also enticing them to interact with other users' content?
Our ‘creation’ feature is clunky and confusing. We don’t offer fun ways for people to create content or interact within our app.

Through investigation, we learned that our 'Creation' feature was clunky and confusing. We didn't offer fun ways for people to create content, and interaction opportunities were limited.

How can we provide better ways to share content that feels fun, easy and desirable to a user, while also enticing them to interact with other users content?

our HYPOTHESIS

our HYPOTHESIS

We believe that a simpler way to interact with content will result in users being more engaged on the app. A poll creation feature would enable quick creation and interactions, and we expect to see an uplift in usage intensity within Mumspace.
If we can improve our features to support users interacting with each other in our app, while also improving our content creation abilities, we hypothesise that users will increase their usage intensity within Mumspace.

Users can only create one type of content - a ‘post’.

Previously our only creation feature was to create a post. This format is rigid and doesn’t promote sharing with others. Generally, on social platforms people enjoy sharing content with friends, family and acquaintances. We are seeing a disconnect with what people want, and what we offer in our app.

Users can’t connect or interact with other users.

Users of most social platforms expect a range of features available for them to interact and connect with other users. Without any ability to connect directly with each other, users feel isolated from one another and as though purpose in Mumspace is to passively consume. We are seeing that people consume and then leave, and don’t often return.

Content seen in our app does not innovate users to create their own content.

Users only see content created by the Mumspace content team. While interesting and informative, the lack of user-generated content supports a passive ‘use and consume’ attitude. It does not encourage users to create their own content because they don’t feel like there is anyone on the other side of the screen.

17 out of 20 testers are interested in, and like the overall concept of our new ‘Create a Poll’ feature.

Testers reacted positively towards the introduction of this new polling feature onto our platform. People said the design was beautiful, clear, modern and love the idea of being able to learn from others. These results show us that the general concept of ‘Create a poll’ receives enough positive feedback to build this feature.

Most testers specifically mentioned how the initial view of the poll design, along with the results view of Option 1 were ‘as they expected them to look’ leading me to believe the design is both intuitive and user friendly.

Because this feature hasn’t launched yet, I am only able to analyse our user test results and internal team feedback. Seeing how positively people feel about using and interacting with our polling feature, I believe we will see an increase in overall user session durations. This metric is something we will track over time after launch.

Initially, we plan to create this feature in it’s most simple state to:
  • Use a smaller amount of engineering time.

  • Create the feature as quickly as possible to start collecting real data and observing if users take to this new feature.

  • See if this feature, in addition to our wider engagement project, begins to increase user app usage.

  • Allow time for further exploration into the visible Vs anonymous voting debate.

Engineer handover

Engineer handover

Since the completion of this project, I have dramatically improved our handover processes. I felt we lacked an in depth handover to our engineers and wanted to rectify this for future projects.

Our updated handover now includes:

  • In depth annotations
  • Details on interactions
  • Examples of animations
  • Prototype flows for each scenario
  • Handover Loom video walking through the final designs

Improving Communication:
I also worked with our head engineer to set up feature kickoff meetings and product meetings 3x p.week where the whole team now connects to share what they are working on & if there are any blockers so we can work more efficiently and move at a faster pace.
